Our effort to help needy people in remote communities who are left behind many aspects of life, started with KATOSI, a landing site surrounded by about 17 villages to which the effects of this landing site impact. Being a landing site that connects to various islands, there has been various trading deals which made many people to flock in this area during the start of the 21 century.
Because there were many business transactions taking place everyday, this also made sexual workers from urban areas to come in the same way. The exchange of sex for money and the fact that Anglers (fishermen) and businessmen used to spend money carelessly, made these sexual workers to be more submissive and would eventually give in to any suggestion such as unprotected sex.
This led to the widespread of HIV/AIDS and gave birth to many fatherless children and orphans, who later became victims of child labor and social injustices such as child sacrifices.
The effects widespread further from death of parents to leaving helpless/homeless orphans due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic which swept away their parents. This came as a result of exchange of sex for money which also involved exchange of infections such as HIV/AIDS and other STDs.
When Katosi Inter-community Development Alliance came in to help this community, we later discovered that the birth of challenges in this community was ILLITERACY AND UNEMPLOYMENT; our recent research shows that the problem does not only exist in Katosi, but also in many places in Uganda, East Africa, Africa and across the world.
The lack of sustainable skills leads to unemployment as being uninformed keeps people ignorant and vulnerable to many life-threatening risks. We believe that all live people need to move in the same motion as the world does. when new information hits the world, all people should know and be able to respond to the changes.
We shall still experience many challenges in this world if some people especially in marginalized communities are left UNSKILLED, UNINFORMED and UNSUPPORTED!!
We believe that nothing else can help other than supporting people and communities to workout their own problems. We work with leaders, individuals and families to help them analyse the challenges and draw solutions which they can take on. We work with them in finding out possible solutions and implementing them.
This is where our efforts go. All donations and funds we receive, go direct to help the community not into administration or salary payments of our staff.
We believe that people are able to help themselves, they just need to know how to do it.
OUR MODEL STARTS WITH:
This gives an opportunity to young children to become literates and informed, and the training center is an avenue that gives sustainable skills to children who have graduated from primary school, single mothers and youths who lack skills; to be productive in their communities, be of good standing to become leaders and problem solvers.
After graduating from the skills training, vulnerable youths especially single-mothers are empowered to start their own businesses. This enables them to cater for the needs of their children such as education, clothing, medical care and others. Older girls are risked to getting unwanted pregnancies when they scrape out a living and in the due, men abandon them with their pregnancies or children. These children later become victims of child labor and sacrifices, and when they grow up uneducated or without a skill, they will stand the same risks as their mothers/parents.
Its therefore a step to reduce the number of needy children, illiterates and to cut the cycle of abandoned children in the future.
EACH COMMUNITY, FAMILY OR INDIVIDUAL HAS THE ABILITY TO SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS IN ANY POSSIBLE WAY AND WITH AVAILABLE RESOURCES!
This way, we work together with organised community groups and help them mobilize and utilize available resources for solving their community problems.
We support them with training in various avenues such as savings, modern farming, Small Market Enterprises (SME) management, adult literacy and Agricultural value addition.
We believe that our work creates change in many lives in the community, and we want to continue delivering these services for the future generation.
We want to have Katosi Inter-community Development Alliance continue to offer services even if we no longer existing. So we are thinking about the future!
If we have our own SKILLS, INFORMATION & RECREATIONAL CENTER, we shall not only continue to offer skills to the people in need but also be the source of valid information for all categories of people.
Many people cannot afford to get information from public medias, and end up getting false information. sometimes, when they try to seek answers about their health or personal challenges, they have to pay for these services.
But there is a possibility for these people to access valid information all the time because “only informed people can foster development”.
BELIEVE IN THEM; THEY CAN DO IT!
